White Paper on Prototyping of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface
White Paper on Prototyping of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has spawned a lot of application demands in mobile communication networks with the integration of disciplines, including metamaterials, electromagnetic information, interface electromagnetics, and mobile communications. RIS can not only enhance the deep coverage quality of public mobile communications, low-altitude communications, and industry-specific networks but also enable integrated applications with technologies like sensing and positioning, physical-layer security, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), and full-duplex communications. According to the current state of 5G/5G-Advanced networks and the evolution toward 6G, the industry has increasingly advanced the transition of RIS from theoretical models to engineering applications in recent years. Collaborative efforts among industry, academia, and research institutions have led to extensive prototype validation work, accumulating a wealth of valuable data and experience. This white paper aims to address the initial application and high-value scenarios of RIS in 5G-A and 6G networks. It analyzes and summarizes the industry's collaborative technical validation efforts in recent years, explores the evolutionary path for RIS engineering implementation, and lays the foundation for the future commercialization of RIS technology.
