Movable Antennas for Wireless Communication and Sensing: Fundamental Gain and Practical Design

Movable antenna (MA) is an emerging key technology for next-generation wireless networks. By flexibly adjusting antenna positions at the transmitter and receiver, MA systems can fully exploit spatial variations in wireless channels and substantially improve communication and sensing performance without increasing the numbers of antennas or radio-frequency (RF) chains. This talk will provide an overview of the implementation approaches and application scenarios of MA technology, with a particular focus on its fundamental performance gains over conventional fixed-position antenna systems. For practical dynamic scenarios, we will introduce low-complexity antenna position optimization strategies based on statistical channel information, which can effectively reduce the time overhead associated with antenna movement. We will also present new MA array architectures tailored to different application scenarios, with the aim of reducing the spatial overhead required for antenna movement. In addition, we will further analyze the spatial-temporal degrees of freedom of MA array-based sensing systems and demonstrate their significant performance gains in improving direction-of-arrival estimation accuracy. Finally, this talk will discuss promising future research directions for movable antenna systems.
